Welcome from Interim Chancellor Patrick Guilfoile

Thank you for visiting the website of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University. I hope you agree with me that this is a special place.

There are many factors that go into making UW-Stout unique in Wisconsin. We are the only officially designated polytechnic university in the state, meaning that we blend applied learning, programs that have a career focus, and collaboration with external stakeholders to ensure our graduates are ready to excel in their professions immediately upon graduation. That approach to learning and how we do business is why we have a 98.7 percent employment rate for our new graduates. Our history also includes winning the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, implementing our eStout laptop program, and fostering partnerships with business and industry, all accomplished in modern facilities with up-to-date curriculum.

If you are a prospective student or family member, please look at our impressive array of majors. Also please review our new Blue Devil Guarantee scholarship program that is helping freshmen and sophomores pay for their education. After spending some time with us, I’m convinced you will realize this is the best place in Wisconsin to get a degree that will lead to that all important first job and prepare you for a long and fulfilling career.

About Patrick Guilfoile

Interim Chancellor Guilfoile took office on Aug. 19, 2019, following the retirement of Chancellor Emeritus Bob Meyer.

He is a native of Wisconsin. He obtained a B.S. in Biology and Outdoor Education from Northland College, a Master of Arts in Teaching in Biology from UW-Eau Claire, a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from UW-Madison, and worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Whitehead Institute at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

After his postdoctoral work, he accepted a position at Bemidji State University and stayed there more than 20 years as a faculty member, department chair, Associate Dean, and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.

His priority will be to ensure that the next chancellor of UW-Stout inherits a thriving institution that has remained true to its history.

“I will work hard to ensure that we continue to make progress on the important initiatives currently underway,” he said. “I look forward to working with groups and individuals across campus to ensure their voices are heard before making decisions on important issues.”

“The UW System is excited that Dr. Guilfoile has agreed to serve as interim Chancellor at UW-Stout,” said UW System President Ray Cross said. “Dr. Guilfoile has served with great distinction as Provost, and we are confident that UW-Stout will be in good hands under his leadership and direction while we search for a new chancellor.”

He and his wife Audrey have two children. One son, Steven, lives near Dallas, TX, and runs his own insurance company. Their other son, Forrest, is a medical resident at Mayo Clinic.

When he has free time, he and his family enjoy traveling, particularly wilderness adventure travel.
