1  The Music/Literacy Connection

One of the most powerful tools in an educator's toolbox is often the most underused. Music! The research is abundant as to music's power and its positive effects on our brain. Knowing this power, shouldn't we do all we can to harness and use it to serve our students? Participants will learn fun and purposeful ways to intentionally teach early literacy skills to students through songs, poems, and books. They will gain an understanding of the importance of using music and movement to teach literacy skills such as tracking, phrasing, fluency, voice, inflection, rhythm, creativity, vocabulary, sound discrimination, and comprehension. Participants will come away from this session with easy, fun, and practical ideas to use in their classrooms throughout the daily routine. They will know how to align a music activity specifically to a particular literacy skill.

2  Building Blocks to Quality: A Look at QRIS in Wisconsin

YoungStar, Wisconsin’s quality rating, and improvement system for early care and education has gone lean! A research study on the effectiveness of the states QRIS revealed the quality indicators most related to positive outcomes for children, which were used to update the evaluation criteria for 2021/22. Together we will take a careful look at these quality indicators, considering the research behind each and how they affect quality in early childhood. YoungStar’s new look, the block system will be introduced along with highlights in the most current environment rating scale tools. We look forward to answering questions and having a conversation about how you can meet your program goals.

Linda Armas' ROUTINE RULES! framework guides children to systematically complete specific adult expectations at arrival, dismissal, nap-time, meal, bathroom and more. Adult-child relationships are nurtured, and minutes are added to each day, as waiting and reminders for task-completion is no longer necessary. Explicit direction and strategic application examples, using Linda’s 7 ESSENTIAL CREATE-A-ROUTINE QUESTIONS will guide participants as they learn how to design personalized and effective routines for their role with children. 4  Singing in Signs

6  Mindful Breathing and Calm Centering for Young Children

Mindful breathing is the focus on one’s breathing.  This activity can be an ideal first experience of calm, centered awareness for children. The approach of mindfulness is available to all children and can happen through play, games and focused breathing activities. It is within the scope of all children to learn properly guided breathing, by creating and incorporating the concept into their preschool classroom. It helps them be calm and improves self-awareness. It helps the teacher as well! Learn the four stages of mindful breathing and how to incorporate the various pediatric breathing techniques into your preschool setting.

12  Toxic Stress of Homelessness and Housing Insecurities: Unraveling the Correlation with Early Brain Development and Possible Behaviors

Even though we may encounter homeless individuals and families each day, they are often invisible to us. The rate of homelessness is on a steady rise and its impact affects all ages. Participants in this interactive workshop will gain an understanding of the toxic stress of homelessness and housing insecurity and the impact it has on early brain development and how it may manifest through physical, emotional and mental health and subsequent behaviors. The barriers created by homelessness will be addressed, with an interactive discussion on how programming may reduce those barriers.

18  Using Puppets in the Infant and Toddler Classroom - Make and Take

Have you always wanted to use a puppet but didn’t know how?  Are you a little intimidated about making it talk? This workshop will take the fear out of using a puppet.  You will learn which puppets are best to use to tell a simple story and/or sing a silly song for infants and toddlers.  You will also learn simple tricks to make the puppet talk and interact with this age group. Each participant will get to make their own sock puppet puppy to tell the story, “Dog’s Colorful Day,” written by Emma Dodd.

19  Bringing Stories to Life Using Puppets – Make and Take

Puppets are a wonderful way for preschoolers and kindergartners to practice their language skills.  If a child is uncomfortable talking to an adult they WILL talk to a puppet! In this workshop, you will learn about the different types of puppets and how to manipulate them. You will also learn how to choose a puppet to either sing a song, or introduce a book, or tell a story.  In addition, each participant will get to make their own sock puppet puppy to retell the story, “Dog’s Colorful Day,” written by Emma Dodd.

Our classroom is theme-based with many "pieces to the pie" so this is definitely a great session to attend if you are just first getting your feet wet with inquiry-based learning or wondering about ways you can start to incorporate it more into your classroom. Facts, activities, and reflections will be shared in regards to children and also with trying to teach college students. Wet sleeves and shirt collars? Meltdowns at clean up time? Explore the "why" behind common behaviors that tend to be labeled as "misbehaviors" in your classrooms. Learning the "why" behind the behaviors can help you better understand what the child is trying to tell you. 28  How Can Parent Involvement Alter a Child's Education

Parent involvement? Sure! This session will discuss what this can look like and how to get started.  Understand the value of programming for parents and parent clubs and how they contribute to children’s success. Sharing student work with parents through homework activities and assignments can be fun and explorational but can also be educational for both the student and the parent.  With this approach, you are teaching both the parent and the student. This gets them involved in working on a project together and creates a bond that brings the parent and student closer together.

36  Leaping into Literature: Fifty Nifty Ways to Make A Book

This session is about books that adults can make for and with young children. (It is adapted from a book by Loretta Hatfield and Dottie Ports, 1995). Books can be far more than just a cover and spine! Learn how bookmaking is a hands-on experience, using a wide variety of materials that exercise literacy skills. Activities can be done with a group of children, facilitates cooperative learning and each activity can be tuned to the developmental level of each participating child. Children get involved in the bookmaking process in a fun and creative way while learning about a topic and book and print knowledge. Join us to make a “Tin Pan Tale” or a Paper Bag Puppet Story, or a Tube-In-a Tunnel Tale.

We sill explore trauma and what happens physiologically to children in stressful situations. We will explore what human needs children are looking for from their care providers. Discover how elementary teachers in Wisconsin are using children’s literature to introduce science concepts and engage students in science and engineering investigations. The Using Children’s Literature in Teaching Science (UCLTS) project partnered 40 teachers from 13 school districts in Wisconsin with faculty members from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. This presentation will share the background and goals of the project and three specific examples of how children’s literature was used by teachers to introduce students to science concepts, including the needs of plants and animals (NGSS K-LS1-1, K-ESS3-1), bodies of water (NGSS 2-ESS2.C), and forces and motion (NGSS K-PS2-1-2). In addition to addressing science standards, the teachers also integrated several literacy strands from the Common Core State Standards in English and Language Arts (CCSSELA) into their science lessons, including strategies for reading, writing, creating, and responding to science content presented in informational texts (CCSSELA RI.K1-3, W.K.2, RI.2.3, W.2.2).
