Mental health awareness is the theme of the 32nd annual Hmong Education Conference to be held at University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Dimensions of Wellness: Focusing on Mental Health in the Hmong Community will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center, 302 10th Ave. E.

“We want to teach the older Hmong generations more about these types of illnesses,” said Joshua Yang, of Schofield, HSSO president. “In the Hmong community, there are no real words that describe what these illnesses are, and they get lost in translation.”

The keynote speaker from approximately 10:10 to 11:05 a.m. is Talee Vang, who works as a postdoctoral psychology fellow at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Vang has doctorate and master’s degrees in counseling psychology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul and a bachelor’s in psychology from UW-River Falls. She also is a spoken word artist, having performed nationally, and works with children using art to cope with adversities.

The conference will include three breakout sessions and three workshops for each session.
