5 Things Your Student Should Know in Their Final Semester

Resources for seniors graduating from UW-Stout
December 5, 2019

After what may have felt like a lifetime away, your little first-year student is about to go across the graduation stage, diploma in hand, tassel above, and career ahead. They have grown into a well-rounded human, about to adventure into the next chapter of their life.

Before they turn that page, are you sure they’ve done everything they need to actually graduate? Here are some easy things to forget, important things to remember, and a couple of bonus tasks to ensure you and your student are prepared for the final semester in their college career at UW-Stout.

The second 2019 UW-Stout Spring Commencement ceremony featured students from the College of Education, Hospitality, Health, and Human Sciences.
  1. Check in with their academic advisor before Spring Advisement Day on Tuesday, March 31 to make sure they have their coursework requirements met.
  2. Apply for graduation early, well before the Friday, March 27 deadline, to ensure they are included in the Commencement Program.
  3. Update their preferred name in Access Stout so that their diploma, that all-important piece of paper, reads exactly how they want it to.
  4. If they are still struggling with “what’s next,” contact Career Services early in the semester for resume work, Career Fair information, and assistance finding professional positions.
  5. Sometimes large families need additional tickets for the ceremony. If you know you need more than five tickets, here are a couple of options for you:
    • Have your student talk with others in their program to see if they would be willing to donate any unused tickets.
    • We have a remote viewing area in the Memorial Student Center for guests who do not have a ticket. This is great for young kids and the elderly, as it is air-conditioned, and you're guaranteed a seat with a back.
    • Watch it live from home! Every commencement ceremony is live-streamed, and you can find the link on the commencement website.
