Message from the Chancellor Regarding Commencement

Virtual Commencement December 19, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.

Regretfully, we are unable to hold an in-person commencement ceremony this fall. Instead, we will offer a virtual commencement ceremony for our 2020 fall graduates on Saturday, December 19 at 10:00 a.m. While this news is likely not surprising to most of you, we know it is a disappointment and we remain committed, when we are able to resume in-person ceremonies, to offer the option to any 2020 spring or fall graduate the opportunity to walk in an in person ceremony. Students expected to graduate this fall will receive an e-mail in the next few weeks with information related to the virtual commencement.

A virtual ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 19th at 10:00AM. Please plan to tune in live with friends and family to celebrate your accomplishments! More details regarding the ceremony will be forthcoming, monitor your UW-Stout email for updates.

We would like to include graduates photos in our virtual commencement ceremony, please upload a photo HERE by Friday, November 20th to be included in the ceremony.

  • NOTE: If students have their photo taken at the Grad Fair, we will use that photo for the ceremony. If students decide they do not want this photo used, they should email with a different image.

We will be holding a grad fair on November 19th from 9:00AM – 2:30PM in the Great Hall, MSC. During the grad fair students will be able to complete the following…

  • Get their photo taken with Empire Photography – get a professional photo taken in regalia (or not) which can be purchased and used digitally, purchase prints, or other custom graduation items.
  • Pick-up diploma cover and cordons if applicable – we want to be sure students still receive these important mementos as part of your graduation experience.
    • Note: Cordons are only for students who are graduating with honors.
  • Meet with Career Services, Registration and Records, to confirm they have finished all the senior checkout process.
  • Purchase a cap, gown, tassel, and other graduation regalia from Stoutfitters
    • Online orders:
      • For caps and tassels only use this link,
      • For full regalia and other commencement memorabilia use Herff Jones by following this link. For questions regarding class rings or other items including announcements, you can contact Herff Jones by texting Stout to 811-411-4740.

After the fair, diploma covers, and cordons will be available at the MSC Service Center desk.

  • Note: Cordons are only for students who are graduating with honors.

Online students who would like to receive their diploma cover and cordons (if applicable) by mail, please email with information including full name, student ID and mailing address.

Students need to apply for graduation by Friday, October 30th to be included in the Commencement programs, this includes the virtual ceremony and printed programs. Printed programs will be available for pick-up prior to the December 19th ceremony, students will be emailed for more details regarding pick-up location and time.

We want to be sure that students have the opportunity to celebrate with us in-person. Students will be invited to participate in any future ceremony once we are able to hold them in person. Please be sure to update personal email addresses in Access Stout so that we can be in touch regarding future opportunities.
